Why are your teeth discoloured?

Teeth can become discoloured for a variety of reasons. One of the most common causes is external influences, which we call "extrinsic discolouration". This type of discolouration occurs on the tooth surface due to the consumption of certain foods and beverages such as coffee, tea, red wine and cola, but also due to tobacco consumption. Colour pigments from these substances deposit on the teeth and over time can make the enamel appear darker.

In some cases, however, teeth can also become discoloured from within, a phenomenon known as "intrinsic discolouration". Such discolouration can be caused by certain medications, excessive fluoride build-up in childhood, or trauma and diseases such as tooth decay that alter the inside of the tooth (dentin).

Natural ageing also plays a role in the discolouration of teeth. As we age, the dentin, which lies beneath the enamel, becomes darker while the enamel becomes thinner. This causes the darker colour of the dentin to show through and make the teeth look more yellow.

What is teeth whitening and how does it work?

Teeth whitening, also called teeth whitening or bleaching, is a process in which the teeth are whitened to remove discolouration and stains and give you a bright white smile. Bleaching products usually contain hydrogen peroxide or a similar bleaching agent that penetrates the tooth enamel and breaks down the colour pigments. However, not our tooth-friendly bleaching method at ALPINE WHITE, but more on that below.

There are different bleaching methods, such as in-office bleaching, home bleaching and power bleaching, all of which have their advantages and disadvantages.

Power Bleaching

Power bleaching is a professional method of teeth whitening performed in the dental practice. The advantage of this procedure is its speed and efficiency. Within one session of about one hour, your teeth can become several shades lighter.

During power bleaching, the gums and surrounding oral mucosa are first carefully covered to protect them from the bleaching agent. Then a highly concentrated bleaching gel is applied to the surface of the teeth. Unlike other procedures that require patients to leave the gel on their teeth for several hours or even overnight, power bleaching uses a light emitter or laser to activate the bleaching gel. This process allows the bleaching agent to penetrate deeper into the enamel, removing more severe discolouration.

It is important to note that although power bleaching is fast and effective, it may not be suitable for everyone. For those with sensitive gums, exposed necks of teeth or enamel defects, this procedure could cause discomfort.

In-Office Bleaching

At ALPINE WHITE, we are dedicated to helping you regain your bright smile without pain. Our specially developed whitening method offers a safe and effective solution for removing tooth discolouration. We use a painless procedure without the use of hydrogen peroxide. For this, we use the ingredient phthalimidoperoxycaproicacid (PAP).

PAP is an innovative substance used in tooth whitening and has established itself as a gentle and effective alternative to conventional hydrogen peroxide. PAP has attracted attention in dentistry because of its special properties and advantages.

Among the advantages of PAP is that it is safe and mild. While hydrogen peroxide, traditionally used in teeth whitening, can often cause hypersensitivity and gum irritation, PAP offers a much gentler treatment. It reduces the risk of side effects and is therefore a preferred choice for those with sensitive teeth or gums.

PAP is a very effective bleaching agent that penetrates deep into the enamel to remove stains and whiten teeth. Despite its strong whitening effect, PAP is gentle on tooth structure and does not alter the structure of the tooth. This means that it can whiten the teeth without attacking or damaging the enamel.

Another great advantage of PAP is that it not only removes discolouration, but also has antibacterial properties. This means that when it whitens teeth, it also helps to reduce harmful bacteria, which is beneficial for overall good dental health.

Dental care after bleaching

Achieving a radiant smile in a short time with bleaching is great, but to maintain this result, you also need to do something about it. Careful and consistent dental care after professional bleaching is crucial to maintain the brightness and whiteness of your teeth.

Brushing should be done at least twice a day to remove plaque, discolouration and bacteria that can cause both tooth decay and gum problems. When choosing your toothpaste, you can use whitening toothpastes, which are specially formulated to polish teeth and remove surface stains. ALPINE WHITE whitening toothpastes, for example, come in three varieties and each is designed to meet specific needs.

Regular flossing is also of great importance as it helps to clear the spaces between the teeth of food debris and plaque that is often overlooked when brushing. Flossing not only contributes to overall dental health, but also helps to maintain the results of bleaching by preventing discolouration in these hard-to-reach areas.

In addition, a mouthwash can supplement cleaning by reaching areas that are difficult to reach when brushing and flossing. It can additionally help to reduce bacteria, thus reducing the risk of gum disease and bad breath. But beware, too much mouthwash can in turn lead to discolouration.

Activated charcoal can play a special role in dental care after bleaching. It is known for its strong absorption properties and can help remove surface stains and maintain the whiteness of the teeth. At ALPINE WHITE we also offer you our ALPINE WHITE Charcoal Powder for this purpose.

It is also advisable to avoid discolouring foods and drinks for a few days after your whitening treatment. These include coffee, red wine, black tea and strongly coloured spices such as curry. These can leave stains on the teeth and affect the results of the bleaching.

Overall, thorough and consistent dental care after bleaching is crucial to optimise the effect of the treatment and ensure a permanently radiant smile. At ALPINE WHITE, we are proud to accompany you on this journey and offer you the best products and tips for your dental care.

Dental hygiene and whitening

Come to our Studio for a professional dental cleaning too, because good dental hygiene is not only essential for healthy teeth and gums but also plays a crucial role in teeth whitening. In fact, careful oral hygiene can significantly increase the effectiveness of professional bleaching and prolong its whitening effect. For this, we offer our combination package.

Careful and regular dental hygiene is key to maintaining healthy teeth and a bright smile. Here are some of the many benefits of professional dental cleaning:

1. Prevents gum disease: Regularly removing plaque and tartar by brushing and flossing can reduce the risk of gingivitis and gum disease such as gingivitis and periodontitis.

2. Protects against tooth decay: cleaning teeth helps remove harmful bacteria that convert sugars into acids that attack tooth enamel and cause tooth decay.

3. Preserving the colour of teeth: regular brushing and professional dental cleanings help remove discolouration and stains caused by food, drink and tobacco.

4. Fresh breath: good oral hygiene helps prevent bad breath by removing bacteria and food particles that can cause an unpleasant odour.

5. Prevents tooth loss: by preventing gum disease and tooth decay, dental hygiene can help keep teeth healthy and strong and prevent tooth loss.

6. Promotes general health: there is growing evidence of a link between oral health and general health. Good oral hygiene can help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and other diseases.

7. Saves money: preventing dental diseases and problems can reduce the cost of dental treatment.
